PALEMBANG, South Sumatra: An estimated 2.64 million hectares of forest in South Sumatra are damaged, according to data from the Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Wahli). The destruction is largely attributed to the over-issuance of plantation and mining licenses in forest areas.
"The vast forest destruction has led to increased flood incidents by nearly 40 percent," said Anwar Sadat, head of Walhi's South Sumatra chapter. "We urge the government to prevent the conversion of forests into large-scale plantation projects so that natural disasters can be avoided," he said.
