Our Ecologically Illiterate Presidential Candidates

Concerns have been expressed regarding the presidential candidates' lack of consideration of environmental topics. An editorial in the June 22 The Jakarta Post lamented that in the first presidential debate, the candidates' responses to environmental problems, in this case the Lapindo mudflow tragedy, were disappointing. Economic issues have dominated the campaign season.

Mining License Procedures `Proper'

All 13 coal mining firms operating in Sawahlunto, West Sumatra, complied with procedures in obtaining their licenses, authorities say, as a recent mine explosion raises questions about safety.  The explosion took place at the PT Dasrat Sarana Arang Sejati mine, killing scores of miners.

Coal Mining Halts After Deadly Blast
The Jakarta Post, 06/18/2009

All mining activists in Sawahlunto, West Sumatra, are at a standstill after a major underground explosion killed at least 31 miners and buried 12 others, officials said Wednesday. They added the 12 missing miners were feared dead after being trapped underground for more than a day.
