International mining mission reports of rampant contractualization, depressed wages in mining areas
The International Solidarity Mission on Mining reported today of rampant contractualization, depressed wages and workers’ rights violations in mining areas particularly in the Cordillera and Caraga regions in the Philippines.

Following a 4-day mission in mining areas in Cordillera and Caraga regions,the ISMM said that mining companies do not only extract natural resources of the country but also gravely exploits Filipino laborers with very low wages and rampant contractualization in mining companies.

No Mining, Save The Lung Land of Sumba

Sumba with total area 10.710 km2 is an island which dominated by savanna grassland. That is why since old times known as the farm area (horses, buffaloes, and cows) and became one of the largest meat suppliers in Indonesia. In East Sumba Regency until 2008, total horses population reach amount 28.804 horses. Besides that, this island also called Sandalwood because of the potential of it. But because of over exploitative practice since colonial era until Orde Baru, that potential reduced drastically. Now, practically could not be found Sandalwood forest in big population in this island.

The Story of Arrestment and trial of three villagers in Central Sumba
On March 2th, 2011, as many 111 villagers around the mining location agreed to submit a letter of rejection against mining activity in Central Sumba Regency, it was conveyed to the Regent of Central Sumba and PT. Fathi resources (the majority shareholders owner of Hillgrove Resources - Australia). Until today rejection letter from the villagers has not responded, both by the government and PT Fathi Resources.
